# Notes, handwriting and canvases

> Write by hand and type on the same page, use canvases, convert handwriting and build mind maps.

- Source: https://rooqi.cn/docs/guide/notes-and-handwriting/
- Platforms: iPhone, iPad, Mac
- Version: RooQi 1.0 (pre-release)
- Status: Pre-release
- Last verified: 2026-10-26 against the 1.0 test build interface
- Known limitations: Handwriting tools are richest on iPad. Handwriting conversion quality depends on your writing and the language.

## Notes and canvases

A **note** is a page-based document for writing and typing. A **canvas** is a free-form space without pages for arranging text, images, shapes and handwriting. Create either from **New Note** (the arrow next to it offers **New Canvas**) inside a project.

## Writing by hand

Write with a stylus or your finger. New notes use the **Think pen** by default, alongside a ballpoint pen, pencil and **Highlighter**; your ink is saved automatically. The **Lasso** lets you select handwriting to move it or act on it.

RooQi also supports compatible Bluetooth styluses. When one is connected, RooQi reads its connection, battery, buttons, model and device settings.

> **Note** The optional *disconnect location* feature for styluses is off by default. See the [RooQi privacy policy](/app/privacy/#en) for exactly what it stores.

## Typing and inserting

Use **Insert** to add an **Image**, a **Table**, a **Shape** or canvas content. You can type anywhere on a note alongside your handwriting.

## Convert handwriting to text

Select handwriting with the Lasso and choose **Convert Handwriting to Text**. The original strokes are kept unless you remove them.

## Mind maps

Choose **Create Mind Map** or **New Mind Map** to sketch a structure of topics. Add child and sibling topics, and use **Mind Map on Facing Page** to keep a map next to your notes. Mind maps in RooQi are strict trees: every topic has one parent.

## Undo and history

Undo and redo are available in the toolbar and with the usual keyboard shortcuts on Mac.

## Moving to Trash

Choosing **Move to Trash** keeps the item recoverable from **Trash** until you delete it permanently. Removing a local download, moving to Trash and deleting from iCloud are different actions.
